Digital scrawlings and small paintings

During school lessons I made scrawlings with blue ink on paper. Later I started making small ink and watercolor paintings. That was how my art developed. The shapes of these scrawlings are the basic of most of my artwork, paintings and jewelry.
In 2011 I started making digital paintings, and in September I found the program Artrage. This is a fantastic program that simulates real painting in an unbelievable way. It is especially good in watercolors. It feels and looks like painting with real watercolors.

Now there are three kinds of digital programs I use:
1) Picture manipulating programs. Most of the time this is not really painting, but applying transformation operations to pictures to get something new.
I use the completely free program GIMP for making such paintings. It is comparable to Photoshop and has everything you need for picture manipulating.

2) Classical painting simulating programs. The ones I use are Corel Painter Essentials and now almost exclusively Artrage.

3) Small painting simulating programs for special operations and fast sketches
I use mypaint (it is a complete painting program, but it doesn`t have a s many features as Artrage. It is completely free).
Mypaint is a very good program with many easy to use brushes. It is fast to understand, fast to use, and the brushes are great for doing all kinds of sketches.
There are some other free programs online for download like Artweaver. The ones I tested are all surprisingly good and work well.

Some of the scrawlings in this album I will maybe use for making epoxy paintings or canvas prints from them to paint onto them with real colors. Some of them will be more finished than others. These I will use as paintings for the joint project "music and paintings".

In Norse mythology, Ginnungagap ("yawning abyss") was the vast, primordial void that existed prior to the creation of the manifest universe,[1] corresponding (both in etymology and in meaning) to the Greek notion of Chaos.[2] ...An alternative etymology, linking the ginn- prefix in Ginnungagap with that found in terms with a sacral meaning, such as ginn-heilagr, ginn-regin (both referring to the gods) and ginn-runa (referring to the runes), interprets Ginnungagap as signifying a "magical (and creative) power-filled space".[3]

In the northern part of Ginnungagap lay the intense cold of Niflheim, and to the southern part lay the equally intense heat of Muspelheim. The cosmogonic process began when the effulgence of the two met in the middle of Ginnungagap.

In Gylfaginning by Snorri Sturluson, Gylfi, the king of Sweden, receives an education in Norse mythology from Odin in the guise of three men. Gylfi learns from Odin (as Jafnhárr) that Niflheimr was the first world to be created after Muspelheim:

The episode of St George and the Dragon was a legend[24] brought back with the Crusaders and retold with the courtly appurtenances belonging to the genre of Romance. The earliest known depiction of the legend is from early eleventh-century Cappadocia, (in the iconography of the Eastern Orthodox Church, George had been depicted as a soldier since at least the seventh century); the earliest known surviving narrative text is an eleventh-century Georgian text.

In the fully developed Western version, which developed as part of the Golden Legend, a dragon or Crocodile makes its nest at the spring that provides water for the city of "Silene" (perhaps modern Cyrene) in Libya or the city of Lydda, depending on the source. Consequently, the citizens have to dislodge the dragon from its nest for a time, to collect water. To do so, each day they offer the dragon at first a sheep, and if no sheep can be found, then a maiden must go instead of the sheep. The victim is chosen by drawing lots. One day, this happens to be the princess. The monarch begs for her life to be spared, but to no avail. She is offered to the dragon, but there appears Saint George on his travels. He faces the dragon, protects himself with the sign of the cross,[25] slays the dragon, and rescues the princess. The grateful citizens abandon their ancestral paganism and convert to Christianity.

The dragon motif was first combined with the standardised Passio Georgii in Vincent of Beauvais' encyclopedic Speculum historale and then in Jacobus de Voragine, Golden Legend, which guaranteed its popularity in the later Middle Ages as a literary and pictorial subject.

The parallels with Perseus and Andromeda are inescapable. In the allegorical reading, the dragon embodies a suppressed pagan cult.[26] The story has other roots that predate Christianity. Examples such as Sabazios, the sky father, who was usually depicted riding on horseback, and Zeus's defeat of Typhon the Titan in Greek mythology, along with examples from Germanic and Vedic traditions, have led a number of historians, such as Loomis, to suggest that George is a Christianized version of older deities in Indo-European culture.

In the medieval romances, the lance with which St George slew the dragon was called Ascalon, named after the city of Ashkelon in Israel.

More painting was done. Some parts have to be over painted to bring about more color contrast and deepness.
More gems were added: triangle shaped onyx, square mother of pearl, carnelian and lapis lazuli. Maybe I will remove some of them again later, if I think I overdid the whole thing as usual. Maybe the whole painting has to be cleared up soon. This stage I reach in most of my paintings, and sometimes they get over painted in big parts then. I am not sure up to now what I will do this time. Maybe it won`t be necessary to over paint so much, because I did the painting after a drawing and not as usual out of nothing.
Up to now about 100 pieces of metal were used and 42 natural and glass gems.

This is the music that inspired me to the metal painting
I intended to combine metalwork with painting for a long time, and when I heard this, I started. The metallic sound of the Sitar and the soft sound of the Lyre go together with the painting`s attributes, I think.

More metal was added. Parts of the metals were underlayed with a thin layer of polymer clay (fimo) to make deeper embossing (repoussee) possible (for example upper right side and bottom middle). Parts of metal were cut apart. New parts were embossed, nailed or glued on. The aluminum part in the middle was moved towards the brass part. The amber stone was set onto this aluminum part.

Details were over painted to bring about more connection between the parts of the painting and to effect a movement going from one side to another without breaks (part below the aluminum upper right side).

More aluminum, brass and copper, partly embossed, was added. Acrylic gold and silver paint was used additionally. The copper and brass parts have various thickness. Most are 38 gauge (comparable a few layers of household aluminum foil). Some are 26 gauge (about a thin slice of cheese or sausage).

some of the original shapes were over painted. The painting starts to become different from the drawing now. More coloring was done. Silver metallic color was added. The amber stone was placed between the metals temporary.

Vidridian green (chrome oxide green) and Carbazole violet were added. Other colors I used up to now: Ultramarine blue, Cobalt blue, Cerulean blue, Phtalocyanine blue, Primary blue (cyan), Prussian blue (almost nothing), Titanium white, Mars black. Additionally to these acrylic colors I used black ink pens in the beginning for the outlines.

the pieces of metal and stones are attached permanently. More violet and ultramarine blue (lapis lazuli blue) was used. The amber stone in the middle was exchanged. Now there`s a lapis lazuli.

Now I started a painting on wood. I try to combine painting and metal the first time.
I was now inspired by the music of Dominic Johnson and Michael Levy from England, who recorded a piece with Sitar, Lyre, violin and tablas together.

The metals I use up to now (Nov.6th) are copper, brass and pewter.
The dimension of the painting is about 20x24 inches. The colors are acrylic paint.
